This 12 acre demonstration center is powered by the sun and features a 5,000 square foot strawbale building with passive solar design and recycled materials. The grounds have a wide selection of organic edible and ornamental plants. You will also find numerous interactive exhibits that showcase renewable energy and sustainable living technologies, the world's first solar powered carousel, locally produced biodiesel from waste oil, and a picnic area. You can take a self-guided tour on any day of the week. Just pick up a free self-guided tour brochure from their office. If you want to take a guided tour, they offer a tour every Friday, Saturday and Sunday at 11am and 3pm. The guided tour lasts 50 minutes. If you have a group larger than 12 adults or 6 children, they ask that you please arrange a custom tour instead of the regularly scheduled tours. There is a charge for custom tours. For all guided tours, the center's interns will show you around the demonstration site which includes energy systems, water structures, natural buildings, and the organic farm and garden. This organic winery is located in the Sierra Foothills in historic Amador County. They farm 125 acres without the use of herbicides, pesticides, or chemical fertilizers. In 2002 their vineyards were certified organic by CCOF (California Certified Organic Farmers). Sobon conventionally processes their wines using a minimal amount of added sulfites. During the weekday, Food Remembers bakes and distributes American Flatbread pizzas and on the weekend they convert their production bakery space into a restaurant that is open to the public. The restaurant, named Hearth in the Cottonwoods, is open Friday and Saturday from 5pm to 10pm. Their menu includes organic salads with organic greens and veggies, and The Flatbreads, which are a variety of pizzas. The pizzas are made with 100% certified organic wheat flour. The two cheeses they use on the pizzas are whole milk mozarella cheese and Three Sisters Raw Milk Serena Cheese. The pepperoni and sausage pizzas have nitrate-free meats. The Straus Family Creamery converted their dairy to organic in 1993 and became the first certified organic dairy west of the Mississippi. This organic farm is not open to the public, but they do have tours that are open to the public. The tours, organized by MALT (Marin Agricultural Land Trust), are usually held once a month from Spring through Fall. Straus Family Creamery is a small, family-owned dairy farm that makes great tasting organic milk, organic cream, organic butter, organic yogurt, organic ice cream and organic cheese. They do not homogenize their milk and they do not add unnecessary ingredients to their products. They strive to provide the freshest and purest dairy products. In addition to having their products certified as organic, they are dedicated to farmland protection and environmental issues. They are even turning their cow manure into electricity with their methane digester. And the owner, Albert Straus, has a couple of electric cars which are powered with the electricity made from their methane digester. This organic apple farm is a member of Apple Hill, a group of over 50 farms and ranches in the town of Camino, about 10 minutes east of Placerville. There are six organic farms in Apple Hill, but not all are open to the public. Bodhaine Ranch is open to the public and hosts a small organic farmer's market with certified organic produce (all produce sold at this market is organic). The farmers market is usually open from mid-July to mid-December on Saturday. During some months the farmer's market is open both Saturday and Sunday plus Wednesday. Call or visit Bodhaine Ranch's web site for details including days and hours. Bodhaine Ranch itself offers many varieties of organic apples. They also have a bake shop, but the pies and baked goods are not organic (some may have organic apples, inquire when you are there or call ahead). The farm is open during apple season, which is usually from September to mid-December. This organic farm is about 5 minutes from the highway. From Placerville, head east on Highway 50. Drive for about 10 minutes, then take the Cedar Grove Exit/Exit #54. At the stop sign, turn left and go under the freeway. Continue straight to Carson Road toward Camino. Go about 1/2 mile and then turn right onto Cable Road. Continue on Cable Road for about 1/2 mile. The farm will be on the right. From Lake Tahoe, head west on Highway 50. Take the Cedar Grove Exit/Exit #54. At the stop sign, turn right. Then go straight to continue on Carson Road (toward Camino). In about 1/2 mile, turn right onto Cable Road. Continue on Cable Road for about 1/2 mile. The farm will be on the right. 530-647-0689 Celtic Gardens Organic Farm 4221 North Canyon Road Camino; CA This organic apple farm is a member of Apple Hill, a group of over 50 farms and ranches in the town of Camino, about 10 minutes east of Placerville. There are six organic farms in Apple Hill, but not all are open to the public. Celtic Gardens is open to the public from August to November, on weekends only. They grow apples, table grapes and a variety of pumpkins. Some cooking classes are offered at this farm.
