The VLA is one of the world's premier astronomical radio observatories. It consists of 27 antennas arranged in a huge Y pattern up to 22 miles across. There is a self-guided walking tour. This is where part of the movie Contact, starring Jodie Foster, was filmed. The VLA is located 50 miles west of Socorro on U.S. Highway 60. From U.S. 60, turn South on NM 52, then West on the VLA access road, which is well marked. Signs will point you to the Visitor Center.
