The observatory is located within the Cleveland National Forest on Palomar Mountain at an elevation of 5000 feet. There are self-guided and guided tours available. To go inside the room with the 200 inch Hale Telescope requires a guided tour. These guided tours for the public are on select Saturdays only. To reach Palomar exit Interstate 15 at Highway 76 east. Take S-6 to the left in 25 miles up the mountain to Palomar. The hours are 9 am - 4 pm daily in the Summer and 9 am - 3 pm in the Winter except Christmas and Christmas eve. The gift shop is only open on weekends except in July and August.
